‘One love, one heart let’s get together and feel all right… Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (one love), there is one question I’d really love to ask (one heart). Is there a place for the hopeless sinner who has hurt all mankind just to save his own? Believe me.”- One Love by Bob Marley
It was in the middle heat of summer when I heard this song from a Jamaican singer Bob Marley. I was mesmerized with the syncopated beat of this music and my ears couldn’t recognize the genre of this music. Curiosity lurks in my mind that pushed me to inquire the style of music. Then I found out that it was the ‘reggae’ style of music. Back then, I began to love reggae and my enthusiasm for this Caribbean music grows more and more as time rolls by.
My love for reggae pushes me farther to inquire its historicity and mysticism to have deeper appreciation of this ragged style of music. I delve into books and surf into the net to deepen my knowledge about this music. This music has rich in history which independence and religion are inseparable.
Reggae is the monument of Jamaica’s liberation from slavery and colonialism. If one would listen to its message, themes like emancipation from oppression, panacea for political corruption and repression, imploring for harmony among Africans are common. It implies that reggae sprouted out from the deep recesses of human heart crying for love, peace and freedom not only for African but also for whole humanity. This is one of the things I appreciated about reggae- a song that is not only a product of art but also a masterpiece out of people’s desire for global unison through an active attempt to discern the will of JAH (God) and keep it.
Perhaps this is one of the gifts of Jamaica to the world- their reggae music and how this music and singing lifted the spirits through the slavery and colonialism as wall as being a weapon against political corruption and civil disorder. It is the voice of the people who celebrated the joys of life and spread One Love through out the world.
Reminiscing the past, when I came across with reggae I appreciated it because of its unique style- it’s a plain aesthetic admiration. But now that I already knew its background and context it is beyond aesthetic admiration I have for reggae but also the inner groaning for global care.
