How to Build Up Your Confidence

There are some people who just seem born confident. They walk tall, with great posture, and they speak eloquently and with conviction. We look at them with a mixture of awe and envy—“How can I be more like them?”

Luckily, confidence is not an innate trait. It’s something that is either built up or eroded over time, due to a number of influence. Sometimes the most confident children will become increasingly unsure of themselves as they grow older if they are constantly under attack by their parents or other children. And sometimes nervous kids with low self-esteem will blossom into mature, assertive adults as a result of their achievements and parental support.

If you suffer from a lack of confidence, you may feel as though you have diminished worth or a lack of proper direction. But you don’t have to feel that way any longer. Changing your behavior to become more positive and self-affirming will enable you to build your confidence and grow more and more sure of yourself with each passing day.

Suggestions For Boosting Your Confidence:
Don’t confuse your actions with yourself. Repeat this mantra: what you do is separate from who you are. Therefore, mistakes that you make are no reflection on whether you are a bad person. Rather, they are errors made by a good person who was momentarily confused or led astray. Keep this in mind at all times.

Believe in yourself. As simple as it sounds, the act of truly believing that you have something to contribute to the world will equip you mentally for success.

Listen to your feelings—don’t ignore them. If you are nervous about something, or if you are worried that you have made mistakes in the past, don’t suppress those feelings. Instead, acknowledge them and consider them carefully.

Change the things that you are capable of changing. Think about any negative events or behaviors that might be making you unhappy. Now think about whether you could have done things differently. Use your past mistakes and negative feelings and transform them into a more positive future. Remember, every mistake is any opportunity to learn and grow.

Do take some chances. Perhaps you’re worried that failure will cause you to become even less confident. But don’t let fear of failure hold you back from accomplishing wonderful things! Most of the greatest accomplishments in life happened because of a calculated risk. Nothing worth doing is ever easy—remember that and push yourself to do the best you can with the strengths you possess.

Don’t dwell on negatives. Instead, think about the ways in which you are successful and how you can use your strengths to build a better future.

Praise and reward yourself for a job well done. Every time you accomplish a significant task, make a celebration of it. Give yourself a reward—anything from a bowl of ice cream to a trip to the spa. This will help reinforce the successes you have had and their impact on your life
