To conquer the future, India needs to step in the past
- Musings@aks
India glorious! It’s a wonderful time to be an Indian, today; it is not an exaggeration to say that 21st century belongs to India. While US reels in the throes of recession, we are looking at consistent growth.
We have overtaken China in number of new connection in mobile phones. The teledensity is now about 25. This points out to the fact that technology is being accepted rapidly in tier 11 and tier 111 towns. Also we
Is everything really so great? Let us pause and think. Most of the technology is developed abroad, albeit Indians are involved in the development of it a la Vinod Dham and Pentium.
But ultimately the technology is owned by some one else and people like Vinod are an exception rather than the rule. Most of them have come up on their own. Even a cursory glance at the toppers of the last few years will show that most of them end up in jobs that are at best paying good money, but rarely are the reshaping the world or their own space.
Where are the world beaters like Aryabhatta? Or even a Chanakya?
Aryabhatta was the one who gave the world Zero, also he accurately calculated the value of pi. All this in 500-600 AD!
Actually, if you look at the history during that time, we see a high level of awareness of science and astronomy among the people. Most of the findings were used by the people. Kings generally encouraged free thinking. Aryabhutta and his elk wrote extensive records, which, unfortunately are not, in many cases, with us anymore.
But that zest for science and expanding its horizon, gradually faded, until we have become a nation of followers.
We can lay the blame on the education system that is being followed. It is vestigial remain of the babudom designed by the East India company. The entire focus is towards scoring in the exams and not at acquiring knowledge and expanding thought.
Education should be freed from the clutches of authorities and handed over to passionate teachers and thinkers. This will ensure that our children become leaders in true sense of the word.
If we need to regain the old glory and become true masters of our national destiny, then lets turn the pages of history and rediscover the joys of free thinking again.
