The Top Five Worst Mistakes

In order to keep your website listed in the search engines you need to avoid the common mistakes that many people still make. These mistakes can only harm your rankings and there is simply no reason to use them.

Here are the most common search engine optimization mistakes to avoid:

1.Title tag keyword stuffing

Its important that you put the main keyword phrase you want to target in the title tag, but it should only be used once and not just repeated over and over again. The title is meant to clearly explain what your website is about and not just used for keywords.

2.Meta tag keyword stuffing

Although search engines such as Google don't use meta tags when ranking websites they will still penalise you if you have entered too many keywords and used the same keyword multiple times. The meta tags should only contain the most relevant keywords.

3.Alt tag keyword stuffing

The purpose of the alt tag is to display text to a visitor when a graphic doesn't load properly or is blocked by their web browser and its not meant to contain a list of repeated keywords. The alt tag should only contain a brief description about what the website is about.

4.Using hidden text

If you hide keywords on your website by making the text colour the same as the background you will risk having your website penalised for trying to trick the search engines. Hidden text should never be used as it can seriously harm your rankings.

5.Linking to banned websites

This may seem obvious and something that can be easily avoided, but it can and does happen if you are exchanging links with hundreds of different websites all at once.

Its essential to monitor each of your link partners on a regular basis to see if any of their websites have suddenly become banned from the search engines.

If their website is banned and you are still linking to them you will alert the search engines and this is one of the main reasons why many websites get banned and the owner has no idea why.

Despite how clever search engines have become, many people still think they can trick them without realising what a negative effect these mistakes can have on their website and business.
