They seem to have it all: talent, beauty, money, clothes, and the perfect entourages. They're today's celebrities and their fashion choices seem to extend way past the red carpets. Don't seem to think so? Then why is there more publicity on what Lindsay and Paris are wearing rather than their movies??Ok, Ok...bad example, but what they're wearing does cover every glossy magazine and designers are quick to jump on the trends.

Consumers are transfixed on celebrity coverage and are anxious to see what they'll wear next. But why is this? And, has it always been like this?

To answer this you must compare apples to apples.

Back in the 1950s when the main style icon was no other than America's sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, there was a lack of technology and resources that could contribute to consumer's obsession with celebrities. It often took weeks or even months to get photographs out into the average person's hands. With the delay from photo shoot to the actual product, day to day citizens weren't allowed to get addicted to their favourite fashionistas.

Now with modern day technology is takes minutes to upload the latest picture of Naomi Campbell's outfit off the catwalk. This prevailing technology has only fuelled the fire to celebrities influencing fashion.

Another reason for the recent surge is celebrities' increase in power. Just being an actress doesn't make you famous anymore. You have to be a singer, actress, spokeswoman, and designer. Allowing celebrities to create, market, and develop their own clothing lines has allowed them to control the trend and in turn what you wear.

Many people find it hard to admit that they are copying Mischa Barton's latest look, but what they don't realise is most mainstream brands are altering their lines based on modern-day celebrities, and in turn your look.

So, to answer this question - Has fashion always been shaped by celebrities? - yes and no. Yes, celebrities are influencing fashion more than ever with their high powered lines, celebrity fashion shows, and increase media coverage. But, there has always been a celebrity impact; there just wasn't as many media outlets to stimulate the obsession. I mean how else could Audrey Hepburn's little black dress still be all the craze?
